Ruben Svestka Funeral Conducted on Tuesday

Funeral services for Ruben Svestka were held Tuesday at the Assumption church. The funeral mass was celebrated by the Rev. Edmund Cooney. The Rev. Francis Lann of Protivin performed the graveside services.

Burial was at the Holy Cross cemetery in Schley. The Peckosh-Conway Funeral home had charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Svestka died Feb. 22, at the hospital in Cresco. He had multiple sclerosis with complications and has been in a wheelchair for the past 11 years.

Ruben William Thomas Svestka was born Dec. 21, 1897, on a farm in the vicinity of Lourdes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Svestka. He attended grade and parochial schools. He was a member of Holy Cross church at Schley until his retirement and then a member of Assumption church.

He belonged to the Modern Woodman and for many years was secretary of the organization. He assisted in organizing the Holy Cross church at Schley and was treasurer for many years. He was also treasurer of the school board of Paris township.

He married Jessie Shimek on Sept. 12, 1922, at the Holy Trinity church in Protivin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Arthur, and a grandson, Dean Hruska.

Mr. Svestka is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Arnold (Giovanne) Hruska of Cresco, Clair and Arthur of Cresco and Paul of Schley, 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Lillian) Snopek of Dyersville, Mrs. Grace Banks of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Gilman (Lavonne) White of Marion, Wis. Those attending the funeral were from Marion, Wis. Dyersville, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Ft. Atkinson, Ridgeway, Elma, Lourdes, Schley, Maple Leaf, Cresco, Spillville, Calmar, Colesburg, Cedar Falls, Charles City, Rochester, Lime Springs, Decorah and New Hampton.
