Accident claims Paul Svestka
A young Cresco man was killed in a one vehicle accident in Winneshiek County early last Thursday morning when his car failed to negotiate a curve.
Paul Svestka, 19, was pronounced dead on arrival to the Winneshiek County Hospital in Decorah following the 2:15 a.m. accident.
The mishap occurred on county road B-16 about five miles west of Spillville, when the Svestka vehicle failed to negotiate a curve near the Bohemian cemetery. The car went off the roadway and rolled over several times with Svestka thrown out of the car.
It was the third fatality in Winneshiek County this year and the accident remains under investigation.
Funeral services for Paul Svestka were held on July 7 at 9:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic church in Schley. The Rev. Leo Riley, pastor of St. Patrick’s church in Dubuque, celebrated the funeral mass. Interment was in Holy Cross cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Paul Alan Svestka was born January 17, 1965 in Cresco, the only son of Paul and Patricia Svestka. He graduated from Crestwood high school in 1983 and from NIACC in Mason City on June 29, 1984. Paul was a member of Holy Cross Parish.
Survivors are his parents, Paul and Patricia of Schley; three sisters, Debbie Kupka and Sheri Kuhn both of Cresco and Gina at home; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Jessie Svestka of Cresco and maternal grandmother, Irene Smith of Elma.
Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Downers Grove, Ill.; Stewartville, Harmony and Rochester, MN; New Hampton, Charles City, Decorah, Osage, Hazelton, Fairbank, Dyersville, Dubuque, Calmar, Waucoma, Riceville, Ida Grove and the surrounding area towns.
