Edward J. Shimek, 77, services held January 3

Funeral services for Edward Joseph Shimek, 77, of Elma, were held Thursday, January 3, at 10:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lourdes, with Rev. Henry Dunkel officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Schley.

Pallbearers were Leland Tonn, Tim Shimek, Dennis Stevenson, Marvin Tonn Jr., Carl Shimek Jr., Arthur Drtina Jr., and Michael Tonn.

Edward Joseph Shimek, died Monday, December 31, 1984, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Elma, after a lingering illness.

He was born November 12, 1907, in Howard County, the son of Joseph and Caroline (Kubech) Shimek. He attended the Howard County rural schools and was a retired farmer. On June 9, 1931, he married Helen Drtina and was the father of two children. Besides being a farmer, Ed was associated for many years with the Boy Scout Troop 172 in Lourdes, also served as Scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts. He was an inspiration to the many boys he loved and served, teaching them conservation, the study of rocks, plants, trees and animals. In addition to this, he was called upon each year to assist elementary students gathering their leaf collections. In the spring, the Scouts will be planting a tree in his memory at Lourdes in recognition of his knowledge and expertise.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Gloria) Tonn, Elma; one son, Carl E. Shimek, Sr., Fredericksburg; 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Svestka, Cresco, Mrs. Lucy Carroll, Waterloo, and Mrs. Bernadette Burke, Elma.

He is preceded in death by a great granddaughter, two brothers, William and Joseph, and four sisters, Louise, Mary, Johanna, and Helen.

Relatives and friends attended the services from Crystal Lake, Austin, Waterloo, Cresco, Marion and the surrounding communities.
