George John Rathert, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rathert, was born in Bonair, Ia., Feb. 26, 1882, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Martha Ruchti Oct. 22, 1903, and to this union was born one son, Gerald, who departed this life July 5, 1933.

Mr. and Mrs. Rather went to Canada in 1910 and from there moved to Columbia, S.D. in 1923, continuing there since. George did carpenter work until 12 years ago when he began to work at a filling station and for the past four years he had the managership which he carried on until his death which occurred as he was going home from the station, Dec. 14, 1946.

George was a man respected by the entire community, one who will be missed by young and old and remembered as the kindly friend who always had time to be neighborly.

He leaves to mourn his death his widow, two brothers- Henry of Starbuck, Canada, Frank of Bath, S.D., two sisters- Mrs. Frank Bouska of Brunkild, Man. Can., Mrs. J.J. McDonald and his son's widow, Mrs. Barbara Rathert of Compton, Calif., also several nieces and nephews.

Rites were held at the Congregational church at Columbia, S.D., by Rev. Moore and a short service at the home conducted by Rev. Lundgrebe. Burial was at the Columbia cemetery in the family lot. His brother Henry and sisters from Canada and the daughter-in-law from California attended the funeral.
