ACCIDENT AND DEATH
Thursday afternoon Mrs. James Oakley with two other ladies driving toward Cresco were run away with coming down the hill north of the John Nichols house, the team turning into the field almost in front of the house, throwing all three out. Five minutes after the accident, on our way to Cresco, we found the ladies with her, giving Mrs. Oakley, whom we found seriously hurt, such support as they could. She was unconscious, her left arm broken with evident signs of alarming and dangerous injury. After assisting in getting her into the house and as comfortably placed upon the bed as the nature of her injuries would allow, we hurried to town for Mr. Oakley and a physician both of whom were on their way to the scene of the accident in 45 minutes from the time we left it. Mr. Oakley had his team already to start for home as we came into town, and ordering Dr. Eddy to be sent out, hurried off, the Dr. following and passing him a mile or so out, hurried on only to find that the vital spark had already gone out and Mrs. James Oakley was cold in the embrace of death. The young ladies with her were considerably shaken up but not seriously hurt. Their names we did not learn nor any of the particulars of the accident as the need for immediate help seemed too urgent to permit of delay to make any inquiries, and at this writing we are ignorant of all the facts pertaining to the matter, except as related.
