Services held for William Murray, 61

Funeral services for William Murray of San Diego, CA were held on Friday, January 12 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiated. Interment was in the Phillips Cemetery in rural Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

William, 61, died Friday, January 5, 2001 in Lajolla, CA following heart surgery.

Willliam Allen Murray was born August 23, 1939 and raised in rural Cresco, the son of Lyell and Lucille (Ruzicka) Murray. He attended Liberty Country Grade School and Cresco Public High School. He was active in band, FFA, and sports. He was a state wrestling champion in 1958, the year of his graduation.

He attended Iowa State University in Ames and majored in journalism. He was active in campus activities, fraternity life, and ROTC.

Bill joined the Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and was commissioned as an Ensign. He was deployed to the USS Galveston from June to December in 1965 as a 1st Div. Officer. In December 1965 he volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served in Danang during 1966 and 1967 as a personal aide to Rear Admirals, Weschler, Lacy, Jones and Pratt. He was honorably discharged in 1968 and continued to serve in the US Navy Reserve retiring from it in 1984 as a Lieutenant Commander.

During his military service he received a Citation for Exceptionally Meritorious Service, a National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal, and a letter of Commendation.

Upon his discharge from active duty in 1968, Bill was employed with Xerox Corporation in San Diego, CA where he continued to work for 32 years, before his retirement in June of 2000.

Survivors include his children: Scott Corder Murray, Erin Corder Murray, Meghan Ann Murray, and Kimberly Alyson Murray all of San Diego, CA; one brother Eugene of Washington and one sister: Diane Qvern of Cresco.

William was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Dennis.
