Paul Murray Killed When Station Wagon Goes Off Curve on 139 Friday Night

Paul E. Murray, 33, Cresco father of two children, was killed when his station wagon left highway 139, two miles east and two miles north of Cresco, Friday night about 10:45

His was one of the seven highway fatalities chalked up for the state over the Memorial day weekend.

Paul, according to Sheriff Percy Haven, who was called to investigate the accident only to find that the accident took place in Winneshiek county, was alone in the car. As he reached the curve, he apparently lost control of the vehicle, sending it off the highway. As the car turned over it rolled on him. His head was badly crushed. The body was found about 50 feet from where the vehicle stopped.

Winneshiek county authorities were notified by Sheriff Haven that the accident took place outside of Howard county jurisdiction and in the adjoining county. The car was demolished.

The accident was the second traffic fatality in the Cresco community in 10 days.

Charles R. Powers, 30, of Cresco, was killed when his convertible went through a stop sign at the Howard Center corner and plowed into the rear of a truck unit of a semi-trailer May 21. Charles died a few hours later in the Cresco hospital.
