Memorial services for Kenneth G. Fiske were held February 11 at Claremont, California. Fiske was born into a musical family in Cresco on January 6, 1901. He was professor emeritus of music at Pomona College and the Claremont Graduate School, as well as curator of the Claremont Colleges Janssen Collection of Musical Instruments. Fiske died late Tuesday, February 7, following a long illness. He was 83.
Kenneth Fiske began playing the violin at the age of five and at 17 was performing on the Chautauqua series circuit playing 23 solos a day and 160 concerts a year as the show traveled from town to town in the East and Midwest. He received bachelor and master degrees in music form the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He studied more extensively with the University of Chicago, Juilliard School of Music and the University of California, as well as study in violin and chamber music with many prominent European and American teachers. He joined the Pomona College faculty in 1936 as instructor in violin and conductor of the college orchestra.
Fiske married the former Gloria Burch, a pianist, when both attended the American Conservatory. He is survived by his wife and a son.
