Services held for former resident James Cashman

James P. Cashman, 69, an insurance agent for 37 years, died Monday at his home in Santa Barbara.

Mr. Cashman was born Aug. 7, 1919 in Elma, Iowa. After graduating from Oklahoma, A&M, he served as a captain in the infantry during World War II. In 1949 he received a law degree from the University of Iowa School of Law.

He moved to Santa Barbara in 1952 and was a State Farm Insurance agent for 37 years.

Mr. Cashman served in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and on the Old Mission Parish Council. He was past president of Catholic Social Services, served on Dolores School P.T.A. and the Secular Franciscan Order.

Mr. Cashman helped sponsor the Handicapped Encounter Christ retreat for seven years. He trained with his wife, Virginia Cashman, in personality and human relations growth formation.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; a sister, Lois Iredale; 11 children, Jessica, Anne, Paul and Kelly Cashman and Ellen Guetler, all of Santa Barbara; Linda Williams of San Francisco, Cynthia Mitchell of Oregon, Dr. Mary Lucero of Monterey, Tim Cashman of Bakersfield, Tom and David Cashman of San Diego; and nine grandchildren.

A mass was held on Thursday at the Santa Barbara Mission. Donations may be made to the Franciscan Friars of Santa Barbara, Catholic Charities or the Visiting Nurse Association.
