James Malek, 82, Prominent County Resident, Dies

A requiem mass was offered in the Schley holy Cross church August 27 for James Malek, 82, well known Schley business man long active in civic affairs, who died August 24, in the Cresco hospital following major surgery. Mr. Malek had been in ill health for several months.

Among the various offices which Mr. Malek held were those of treasurer of the Hawkeye Tri-County Rural Electric cooperative since its organization in 1939, treasurer of the Holy Cross church, a former member of the Howard County fair board and a former director of the First National bank.

The requiem mass was offered by the Rev. J. S. Skluzacek, pastor, with burial in the Holy Cross cemetery at Schley. The Peckosh Funeral home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

James Malek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Malek, was born July 17, 1877. He operated a general merchandise store in Schley for many years.

Mr. Malek was married to the former Carrie Lentz in Spillville July 12, 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Malek became the parents of two children.

Mr. Malek was a member of the Holy Cross church, the Holy Name society and Modern Woodmen.

Surviving Mr. Malek are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Eldon (Ruth) McGee, and two grandchildren, James and Nanny McGee. There are also five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bouska of Protivin, Mrs. John (Cecilia) Lentz of Spillville, Mrs. James (Frances) Ondrasek, Mrs. Joseph (Carrie) Ondrasek and Mrs. Will (Mary) Hyke, all of Cresco, and one brother, Joseph Malek of Decorah.

Preceding Mr. Malek in death was a son, George Malek, and a brother, John Malek.

Relatives and friends from out-of-town present at the funeral services included William Malek of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Sobolik of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Caffrey of Des Moines, Mrs. Les Schreiner and Irene McGee of Minneapolis, and others from Riceville, New Hampton, Elma, Lawler, Protivin, Spillville and Calmar.
