Another Pioneer Gone

Mr. Philip Howe, who located in Howard county in 1856, departed life in this village, at the home of his son, P. C. Howe, August 21, 1891, at the age of 77 years and 6 months.

Deceased was born in Kent county, England, Feb. 21, 1814, and was united in marriage with Charlotte Knight in 1835. In 1842 they came to the United States, locating in Lancaster, Ohio, where they resided seven years, thence removing to Benton Ridge, Hancock county, in the same state, residing there until their removal to Iowa in 1851, when they located near the “Oll Mission” Winneshiek county. In 1856 they came to Howard county, pre empting a quarter section on section 19, in Albion township, in which town he continued to reside to the time of his death. The 2nd of April last his wife died, since when his health has been gradually failing until death closed the scene.

Eight children were born to them, four of whom remain, viz: Philip C. Howe of Cresco, W. K. Howe, and Mrs. John Smith of Albion, and Mrs. H C. Hawkins of Nebraska.

The deceased was an honest man and a good citizen who was highly esteemed by his neighbors and fellow townsmen, who confiding in his judgment and integrity of character, year-year, for many years elected him to assess the property of his township. When such a man passes away, it is meant that his virtues be held up to the youth of the land as worthy of their attention, and followed, as such to freight their lives with happiness, resulting from conscious duty performed, followed by profound regret from their fellow men when life’s fitful battle is over.
