Harold Henkes, 77

CRESCO – Funeral services for Harold H. Henkes of Cresco, IA were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery in rural Cresco.

Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 17 at the Conway Funeral Home in Cresco with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Conway Funeral Home in Protivin.

Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled the arrangements.

Harold, 77, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 of Regional Health services of Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Harold Henkes was born November 19, 1931, in Albion township, Howard County, IA, the son of Harry L. and Esther (Herold) Henkes. He attended the rural school near his home and St. Joseph’s Grade School then graduated from Cresco High School in Cresco. While in school, he went out for the wrestling team. Following his education, he entered the armed forces and fought during the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of corporal in the infantry and always enjoyed telling about his experiences during his service. After the service he worked on the road and helped build the road west of Protivin.

On August 1, 1970, he married Mildred Pesek at the Holy Cross Church in Schley, IA. They made their home on the home place even after they retired and rented the farm out. He was a farmer at heart, raised pigs and enjoyed getting together with all the neighbors at the meeting place at Schley. He enjoyed fishing, watching the birds and building bird feeders. He also enjoyed working on old tractors in his shop. Harold liked to build and fix things. Most of all he enjoyed teasing his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Mildred of Cresco; two sons: David (Sue) Henkes of Independence, IA; and Dale (Amanda) Henkes of Protivin, IA; five grandchildren: Katie and Lilly Henkes; Devin and Daric Albertson and Abbey Ott; one brother: Melvin of Cresco; two sisters: Verna (Darold) Dralle of Wabasha, MN; Charlotte Henkes of Wabasha, MN and brothers-in-law: Ronald Weis of Minneapolis, MN and Art (Janice) Pesek of Cresco.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Sister Lea Henkes and Shirley Weis; three sisters-in-law: Marlene Henkes on May 11, 2009; Lorraine Pesek and Genevieve Pesek; and brother-in-law: Robert Pesek.
