FUNERAL SERVICES FOR CHARLES GROTH HELD IN MAPLE LEAF

Longtime Resident of County, 77, Died in Riceville Home of Sister September 19

Funeral services for Charles Groth, age 77, long-time resident of Howard county and native of Germany, were held in the Maple Leaf Saint Paul Lutheran church Friday afternoon. The Rev. F. Sauerbrey, pastor, conducted the service and burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Groth had been in poor health since February and for the past six weeks had made his home with his sister, Mrs. William Johlas, in Riceville. He was admitted to the Cresco hospital September 10 and died September 19.

Charles Groth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Groth was born in Meklenburg Schwerin, Germany, September 1, 1873. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and when 17 years of age came with his parents to the United States. His parents established their home in Clayton county, Iowa. After living there a year, the Groth family moved to Howard county, near Saratoga. About 20 years ago Mr. Groth moved with his sisters to Elma.

Surviving Mr. Groth are his brother, William Groth of Saratoga; a sister, Mrs. William Johlas; six nephews and seven nieces, and a number of other relatives.

The Howard county resident was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Fred Groth, who died in 1941, and his sister, Johanna, who died in 1942.
