Former Bonair Man Dies in Waterloo; Rites Held Sunday

Lawrence E. Grabau, 66, who had been in failing health recently, died Thursday morning, March 21, in Waterloo. Funeral services were held at the Bonair Methodist church at 2:30 Easter Sunday afternoon. Burial was in the family lot at the Phillips cemetery. Rev. George Turner, pastor of the Cresco Methodist church, and Rev. Joseph Yates of Lime Springs had charge of the services which were attended by a large number of friends and relatives.

Born in Minnesota

Lawrence El. Grabau, son of Daniel and Angeline Grabau, was born near Forestville, a pioneer village of Filmore county, Minnesota, on November 29, 1873. He spent his boyhood days in that locality, enjoying many happy times, but also meeting many rigorous hardships of those days. Very early in life he began to make his own way by sawing lumber and operating threshing machines for other people. In early manhood he often came into Iowa to thresh and on one of those trips came to Howard county.

At that time he became acquainted with and later married Martha May Phillips on August 22, 1894. At first they lived at the James Monroe Phillips home but in 1899, Mr. Grabau, with his wife and two children, moved to Bonair to occupy a new home which he had prepared for them. This continued to be their home until the death of Mrs. Grabau which occurred in November, 1932.

Four children were born to this union. They are: Mrs. Will Goetsch, Albion township; Mrs. D. L. Murray, Albion township; E. L. Grabau, Lakota, Ia.; and Mrs. J. O. Stevens, of Bonair. He leaves to mourn his passing the four children, four brothers, four sisters, 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews and a legion of friends.
