Earl L. Grabau, 90, services held Sunday

Funeral services for Earl L. Grabau of rural Lime Springs were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, June 10 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. The Rev. Allen Wiese officiated with interment in Phillips Cemetery at Bonair. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He died of a heart attack at his farm home near Bonair on June 7, 1990, at the age of 90.

Earl Lawrence Grabau was born in Bonair on November 26, 1899, to Lawrence and May (Phillips) Grabau. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1918 and joined the U. S. Marines in September 1918 and served until Armistice Day.

Following his discharge from the service, Earl attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1923. He later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Earl was united in marriage to Manchile Hunter in October 1923 in Cresco. He was a teacher and superintendent in Iowa and Minnesota schools from 1923 to 1945.

Earl then became a school textbook salesman for several years until retiring to the farm where he lived until his death. He had a special interest in history and took trips to South America, Europe, Africa, India and the Holy Land, which was his favorite.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Althea) Hilliard of Stacy, MN, and Mrs. Stanley (Janet) Austin of LaCrescent, MN; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1958; a son, Roger, in 1988; and three sisters, Sylvia Goetsch, Eva Murray and Edith Stevens.
