Reuben Friedrich services held

Funeral services for Reuben G. Friedrich of Elma were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16 at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, rural Elma with pastor Dan Christensen officiating. Interment was in St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Larry Friedrich, Lonnie Friedrich, Rodney Friedrich, Ron Brummond, Dan Donner, and Mike Paterson. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.

Reuben, 84, died Friday, May 13, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Reuben George Friedrich was born February 22, 1921, on a farm north of Elma, the son of Ernst W. & Alinda (Rimrodt) Friedrich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and graduated from the Elma High School in 1938. After his schooling, Reuben farmed with his family and served a term as the Howard County Treasurer. On April 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Lois Helen Brummond at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elma. Following their marriage the couple farmed north of Elma. Reuben was a lifelong farmer retiring in 1995. Along with farming, Reuben also sold Archer Oil. Throughout the years he served on the Howard-Winneshiek Community School Board, Howard County Board of Review, Howard County Cattleman’s Association, and the Howard County Equity Board of Directors. Reuben and his family enjoyed building a relationship with exchange student son Richard Knudsen from Denmark, who stayed with them during the 1976-77 school year. He was an active member of the St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, where he held many offices. Reuben enjoyed being with family and friends, making new friendships and playing cards.

Reuben is survived by his wife of 53 years Lois, two sons Carl and Denise Friedrich of Lincolnshire, IL and Norman and Susan Friedrich of West Union, IA; a daughter Hope and Russell Grabau of Waterville, MN; a daughter-in-law Kathy Shaw of Riceville, IA; 14 grandchildren Curtis Friedrich, Leanne Friedrich, Mary Lynn Friedrich, Sarah Rose Friedrich, Carolyn Friedrich, Lora Joy Grabau, Zane Grabau, Lydia Grabau, Ezra Grabau, Ezekiel Grabau, Tristan Friedrich, Benjamin Friedrich, Ethan Friedrich, and Ellen Friedrich; a step grandson Nathan (Stacy) Shaw; a brother Orval (Arlene) Friedrich of Elma, IA; a sister-in-law Maxine Friedrich of Elma, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Harold (January 16, 1989), and a brother Loyd Friedrich (October 3, 1989).
