SKETCH OF A HOWARD COUNTY HERO

John Frahm was the oldest son of August Frahm and wife, Anna Marie Krumm. John was born near Elma in Howard County, Iowa on February 17, 1896 and was always at home until his 21st birthday. In September 1917 he was inducted into the service and left for Camp Dodge on September 19, 1917. In November of the same year he was transferred to Camp Pike where in December he became ill with measles and was in the hospital for three weeks. March 26 he was taken ill with pneumonia and was in the hospital six weeks. He was in Camp Pike six months and on June 11th he left for Camp Merritt, N. J. from which point he was sent overseas as a private in the U.S. Infantry. He was killed in action on September 30 at the age of 22 years, seven months and two weeks.

The family was not sure of his death until the father received a letter from the young man’s lieutenant informing him that John was killed instantly by an exploding shell. The letter was printed in the New Era a few weeks ago.

Memorial services were held in the Lutheran church at Maple Leaf on March 16, 1919.

John leaves to mourn, his father and mother, four brothers and three sisters, Ernest, Herman, Arthur, Albert, Amanda, Lydie and Ida.

We present herewith a cut of the young solder from a photograph taken in camp in this country. It is a good likeness of a fine young man who has made the supreme sacrifice for his country and for humanity. His name will be enrolled among our nations heroes whose record in life and in death was true to the traditions of Americanism.

Transcriber’s Note: This article states date of death as September 30; however, cemetery records show October 5, 1918.
