ELIZABETH ANN PHILLIPS

Elizabeth Ann Phillips, eldest child of James Monroe Phillips and Rosetta Hurley Phillips, was born July 4, 1859 in Albion Township, Howard County, Iowa on a farm homesteaded by her father. This homestead was located one mile south of the home where she has lived for the past fifty-five years. She departed this life on August 15, 1936 at her home. She was married in December 1878 to John W. Evans who preceded her in death on April 23, 1926. Ten children were born to this union, a son who died in infancy and Ruth, who passed away on August 20, 1907 at the age of twenty-one. Surviving are: Herbert Ross Evans, Lime Springs, Edna Coll, Minneapolis, Winifred Krueger, Milwaukee, John Phillips Evans, Lime Springs, and Hazel Houser of Maxwell, Ia.; eleven grandchildren, and five brothers, besides many other relatives and friends.

The six sons-in-law acted as pallbearers. In early life she was a member of the Christian Church of which her grandfather was pastor. She was for many years an earnest worker in the Union Sunday House which was held at Liberty School House, a work which she loved. Later, she and her husband became charter members of the Methodist Episcopal church at Bonair. The world is a better place because she has lived.

Funeral services were held from the home Monday at 2:30 p.m., her pastor, Rev. Richard Prescott, officiating. Rev. and Mrs. Prescott sang two songs by request. Interment was in the Phillips cemetery. Besides the immediate members of the family being present at the services, a very large number of neighbors and friends attended. The floral tributes were beautiful and numerous.
