Verona Bartels services held
Funeral services for Verona M. Bartels of Elma were held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, rural Elma with Reverend Dan Christensen officiating. Interment was in St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Elma.
Friends were to call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma and an hour prior to services at the church.
Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma handled the arrangements.
Verona, 85, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Verona Marie Bartels was born February 1, 1920 in Howard County, the daughter of Otto & Etha (Mathias) Prinz. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and attended country school near her family’s home.
On November 18, 1939, Verona was united in marriage to Herbert Bartels in Boone, IA. Following their marriage the couple resided on a farm near Maple Leaf until moving to a farm NW of Elma in 1944. The couple farmed NW of Elma until their retirement in 1980 and moved to Elma.
While in Elma Verona served as a Playground supervisor at the Elma School and also did babysitting. The couple enjoyed going fishing while staying at their cabin in Waterville, MN and traveling to places like Arizona. Verona enjoyed quilting, coffee with her friends, visiting with people, and playing cards with family and friends. Spending time with her grandchildren was very important to her. In recent years she enjoyed taking her golf cart out for her daily activities. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and the WELCA, Birthday Club and was a 50 year member of the Coffee and Thimble Club.
Verona is survived by her four children: Jane (Orie) Windhorst of Lake City, MN, John Bartels of Elma, Phyllis (Don) Rademacher of Rochester, MN, and Donald (Judy) Bartels of Elma; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister Velma Kutzbach of Elma; and a brother Art (Geneva) Prinz of Lime Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert (January 28, 1992); and her parents.
