Mrs. Fred Bartels, Mother of Nine, Dies Thursday

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Bartels, 82, of the Maple Leaf community, who died in the Cresco hospital Thursday, were held at the Maple Leaf Lutheran church Monday afternoon.

Conducting the services was the Rev. E. C. Franke, pastor of the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church. Burial was in the Maple Leaf cemetery.

Mrs. Bartels, the former Louisa Westondorf, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Westondorf, was born in Lyle, Illinois, September 10, 1879. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and as a young girl she moved with her parents to Alta Vista, where she was confirmed. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church.

She was married to Fred Bartels of Alta Vista, by the Rev. John Pless December 8, 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Bartels became the parents of four sons and five daughters.

Mr. and Mrs. Bartels farmed all their married lives. They retired from the farm about 18 years ago. In recent years Mrs. Bartels lived in Maple Leaf.

The last week of her life, Mrs. Bartels was cared for in the Reutlinger Nursing home, in Cresco. Mr. Bartels is also a patient in the home. On Thursday Mrs. Bartels was taken to the Cresco hospital, where she died that night.

Surviving Mrs. Bartels, besides her husband, are her five daughters, Mrs. Albert (Rosie) Brummond of Elma, Mrs. William (Esther) Groth of Boone, Mrs. Carl (Ellen) Mixdorf of Waterloo, Mrs. William (Mabel) Mixdorf of Waterloo, and Mrs. Alvin (Helen) Masemann of Elma, and four sons, Victor of Denver, Herbert of Elma, Leonard of Waterloo, and Clarence of Elma.

There are 35 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Preceding Mrs. Bartels in death were a brother, two sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Relatives attended the services from Waukesha, Wisconsin, Minneapolis, Zumbrota, Chatfield and Alexandria, Minnesota, Illinois, and Waterloo, Denver, Alta Vista, Cresco and Boone.

Transcriber’s Note; Louise’s maiden name was spelled Westendorf in Fred’s obituary and her son Herbert’s obituary so both spellings are included in the surnames.
