Fred C. Bartels Funeral at Saint Peter Lutheran
Funeral services for Fred C. Bartels, 88, who died in the Cresco hospital February 19, were held at the Maple Leaf Saint Paul Lutheran church Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Bartels’ brother, August, of Waterloo, died the day of the funeral.
The Rev. Theodore Lerud, pastor, conducted the services, and burial was in the Maple Leaf cemetery.
Fred C. Bartels was born February 15, 1874. He came to the Elma community from Bremer county when he was 18.
Mr. Bartels was married to Louisa Westendorf at Alta Vista by the Rev. John Pless December 8, 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Bartels became the parents of four sons and five daughters, all of whom survive. Mrs. Bartels died October 19, 1961.
A farmer, Mr. Bartels helped organize the Maple Leaf Saint Paul Lutheran church. He served on the church council 25 years and was a member of the school board and creamery board and served as a township trustee.
Surviving Mr. Bartels are his nine children, including Mrs. Carl (Ellen) Mixdorf of Waterloo, Mrs. Albert (Rose) Brummond of Elma, Mrs. William (Mabel) Mixdorf of Waterloo, Mrs. William (Esther) Groth of Boone, Mrs. Alvin (Helen) Masemann of Elma, Victor Bartels of Denver, Leonard Bartels of Waterloo, and Herbert and Clarence Bartels of Elma.
There are three brothers, Paul of Elma, Bernard of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Charles of Mina, South Dakota.
Relatives and friends attending the services from Minneapolis, Zumbrota and Chatfield, Minnesota, and Elma, Denver, Waterloo, Boone, Sumner, West Gate, Readlyn, Lime Springs, and Cresco.

Transcriber’s Note: Mrs. Bartel’s maiden name is spelled Westondorf in her obituary so both spellings are included in surnames.
