Funeral Services Held Friday For Schley Woman, 75
A requiem high mass was offered in the Holy Cross church, Schley, Friday morning for Mrs. Joseph Barnes, 75, who died on Wednesday in the Birtwistle Rest home in Cresco.
Mrs. Barnes, who had been in ill health for the last several years, had made her home in the Cresco rest home the last two years.
Offering the requiem mass was the Rev. Louis Trzil, and burial was in the church cemetery. The Peckosh Funeral home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Mrs. Barnes, the former Maggie Novak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Novak, was born August 16, 1878 in Spillville. She attended the Spillville parochial school and was married to Joseph Barnes in Spillville, May 1, 1901.
Since her marriage she had lived in the Schley community. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes became the parents of six children, five of whom survive. Mr. Barnes died November 24, 1953.
Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Holy Cross church and the Altar and Rosary societies.
Surviving Mrs. Barnes are her five children, Mrs. Rudy Scheidel of Schley, Mrs. Joseph Polaschek, Miles Barnes and Thomas Barnes of Cresco, and Mrs. Stuart Johnsrud of Schley. Also surviving are a brother, Henry Novak of Cresco, and 19 grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, a daughter, Zenetta, who died at the age of six years, and two brothers and four sisters, Louis Novak, Ed Novak, Mrs. Joseph Sobolik, Mrs. Charles Tupy, Mrs. Albert Mikesh, and Mrs. Mike Barnes.
Relatives from a distance attending the service included Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sobolik of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, Leo Mikesh of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tupy of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barnes of Forest Park, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Barnes of Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Lillihamer of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnsrud of Hazelton, Norma Scheidel of Rochester, and others from Spillville, Protivin, Cresco and Lime Springs.
