Crash claims ex-resident

A former Howard County resident was killed just north of Kendallville Friday evening in a one-vehicle accident.

Thomas A. Melver, 41, was pronounced dead on arrival to the Howard County Hospital in Cresco, where he was taken by the hospital’s ambulance service.

Melver, a native of the Bonair area, was listed as a resident of Haskell, Oklahoma.

The accident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. Friday about one and one half miles north of Kendallville in Winneshiek County. Melver was traveling north on Highway 139 and apparently lost control of the vehicle shortly after negotiating a curve.

The car crossed the center line of the road and went into the west ditch, rolling over before it crashed into an embankment. Melver was partially ejected from the vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by the Winneshiek County sheriff’s office, which was assisted at the accident site by the Howard County Hospital ambulance service and the Cresco fire department.

This was the seventh traffic fatality in Winneshiek County this year.

Funeral services for Thomas A. Melver were held at 11:00 a.m. August 29 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with the Rev. Gary Lee and the Rev. Arndt Braaten officiating. Burial was in Howard Center Cemetery on the family plot. Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas A. Melver was born May 16, 1948 at Cresco, the son of Carl and Eva (Henderson) Melver. He was united in marriage to Eloise Vander Plas and they were later divorced.

Thomas worked as an auto body mechanic in Oklahoma the past 12 years and returned to Cresco about three weeks ago.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Renee Branstetter of Poteau, OK and Layne of Inola, OK; his fiancé, Vicki Miller of Cresco; three sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Grace) Schorr of Cresco, Mrs. Robert (Ann) Balk of Goodell and Mrs. Raymond (Wanda) Sly of Des Moines; seven brothers, Kermit of Shell Rock, Jim, George, Norman and Leonard, all of Cresco; Earl of Arlington and Oscar of Lime Springs.

He was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Shelly and two brothers, Robert and Richard.
