Services held for Helen Zakostelecky

Funeral services for Helen Zakostelecky were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 2 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Allen Hermeier officiating. Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Brian Beatty, Jason Beatty, Dustin Baltz, Nathan Hageman, Joseph Hagemen, and Dean Zakostelecky. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Helen, 66, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

Helen Grace Zakostelecky was born April 14, 1937 in Cresco, the daughter of Vernon George and Rosa Ella Emma (Timmerman) Reuter. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended the rural school near her home and later received her GED. She also attended NICC in Calmar to become a certified nurse aide. Prior to getting married she babysat for neighbors and cleaned house for Phyllis Kach.

On November 13, 1954 she married Francis Zakostelecky at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. They moved on a farm west of Cresco for about three years and then moved into Cresco.

Helen worked for HECO in Harmony, then she drove to Decorah to work for Wapsi Produce. She was a waitress at Hawkeye Pizza and Steak House. She worked at the Cresco Care Center and later worked for Loving Touch, a home care provider. After encountering health problems 15 years ago, she quit working outside the home.

Helen was an excellent seamstress and good cook. She loved to work in her garden and loved animals.

She is survived by her husband Francis; four children: Melody Zakostelecky of Wahoo, NE, Marsha Hageman of Ft. Atkinson, Vernon of Cedar Rapids, and David of Cresco; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Robert of Waterloo; and four sisters: Ruby Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Ruth Lefernik of Riceville, Ida Zakostelecky of Lime Springs, and Karen Fritz of Waterloo.

Helen was preceded in death by two sons: Joseph Francis in infancy and Scott Francis; and her parents.
