Mrs. Maggie Dinger, Pioneer of County, Dies At Age Of 82

Former Worker in Howard Center Postoffice; Funeral Services Held Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Maggie E. Dinger, 82, of Cresco, pioneer resident of Howard county, were held at the Bradley Funeral home Friday afternoon at 2:00, the Rev. John A. Nansen, pastor of the Cresco Congregational church in charge. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery, Mrs. Dinger died last Tuesday night.

Maggie Emma Dinger was born in Algonquin, Illinois, November 20, 1870, the oldest daughter of James and Emma Marshall. She moved to Iowa with her parents in 1884, settling on a farm near Howard Center, the community where she had spent most of her life.

She was united in marriage with Samuel E. Dinger, March 20, 1888, and the couple became the parents of four children, two of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Dinger celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1938. Mr. Dinger died October 23, 1938.

Mrs. Dinger was one of the pioneer residents of Howard county. She had assisted her father in the post office when it was located in Howard Center, and in 1933 helped organize the Howard Center Schoolmates association, an organization of old-time schoolmates which is still active today. Mrs. Dinger was active in this organization and had held various offices since its beginning. She was a member of the Congregational church.

Surviving Mrs. Dinger are two daughters, Mrs. Everett (Elsie) Caldwell and Mrs. Earl (Alice) Waller; seven grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Shafer of Cresco, and Mrs. Grace Gilcrest of Elk River, Minnesota. Also surviving are several nephews and nieces.

Preceding the well known Howard county resident in death were her husband, a son, Edward, a daughter, Mabel, and one grandson, Charles Swim. Two brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.
