Sudden Death Takes Long Time Resident Of Howard County

Samuel Edward Dinger passed away Sunday evening, October 23, at his home west of Cresco following a short illness.

The deceased, a son of David and Mary Fye Dinger, was born at Locust, Iowa, May 21, 1868. He was 70 years 5 months and 2 days at the time of his death.

On March 20, 1888, at Howard Center he was united in marriage to Maggie Marshall. The couple celebrated their golden wedding at their home this last spring. Mr. Dinger lived in this community nearly all his life, having come to Howard county at the age of 9.

He was the father of 4 children. Two survive with the mother, Mrs. Elsie Swim of Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. Alice Waller of Cresco.

An only son, Edward passed away October 12, 1914, and a daughter, Mrs. Mable Braun passed away at her home in Davenport July 15, 1925. There are seven grandchildren, Charles, Dorothy, and Marjorie Swim of Rock Island, Donald Braun of San Francisco, Cal., who made his home with them for seven years and Russell, Roger, and Gladys Waller of Cresco. He is also survived by one brother, W. H. Dinger of Breckenridge, Minn., three half-brothers, John, Manuel and Charles Blaess of Decorah and two half-sisters, Mrs. Kate Russell of Tamarack, Minn., and Mrs. Elizabeth Hutton of Frederick, Wis., and a host of other relatives and friends.

A very unusual coincidence is that he passed away on the anniversary of his son’s birthday.

The deceased was a man of sterling character and a kind and affectionate father and husband. He was known as one who tried to do what was right between man and man – always honest and upright. He was sexton of Howard Center cemetery 25 years.

In his death the community has lost a good citizen while a kind husband and father has gone out from the home.

He was a member of the Congregational church and also a valued and highly respected member of the Woodmen of the World for 36 years. The body will be escorted to the final resting place by the following representatives of his order, George Champlin, George Nieberline, W. F. Milz, R. L. Burr, Joe Tuchek and S. Callison.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Bradley funeral home with Rev. Prescott of Sumner officiating.

Members of the congregational choir sang “We’re Going Down the Valley One by One” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” both favorites of Mr. Dinger.

Burial will be made in the Howard Center cemetery after the arrival of Mr. Dinger’s grandson, Donald Braun of San Francisco, Calif., who was unable to attend the funeral services.
