Maronde

Herman Julius Martin Maronde born May 2, 1848, at Statzpe, in the State of Prussia, Germany, died at Davis Corners, Howard county, Iowa, December 9, 1915, attaining an age of 67 years, 7 months and 7 days.

Deceased was reared in Germany where he learned the millers’ trade. Coming to America at the age of 10 in 1868, he found employment in a sawmill at Manistee, Mich. At Manistee he also found his companion for life in the person of Miss Auguste Stuermer, leading her to the altar July 29, 1870.

In 1878 Mr. Maronde together with his wife and two children came to Iowa, settling at once on a farm near Davis Corners on which (though retired) he was to find his earthly journey’s end.

Indications of failing health were noticed over a year ago. For a while his condition seemed to improve until in May of this year he became seriously ill. Since then physicians called his case hopeless. Continued medical treatment gave him some relief during the summer. However, with the beginning of autumn his condition became so aggravated that even he, who had been hoping against hope, gave up hope for the preservation of his life. For the last two months he was almost totally helpless.

Mr. Maronde had enjoyed good schooling in Germany, such as is commonly accorded children in that country. He had also learned to work and he enjoyed reading and working as long as his physical condition permitted, yet the most blessed schooling we trust, though the most severe, were the trials, the paternal divine chastisements of the long months of suffering, when he learned to submit entirely and willingly to the will of God to cut loose from things earthly, to cherish the consolations of his Savior offered in the Word and Sacrament and to pray for deliverance. Blessed are they that die in the Lord.

Deceased leaves to mourn, his surviving widow, Mrs. Auguste Maronde, two sons Herman of Marshall, Minn., and Louis of Davis Corners, one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Hilke of Cresco, Iowa; (two children died in infancy), one brother and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Davis Corners Saturday, Dec. 11th, at noon. Interment took place at Howard Center.
