Mrs. George Hoppie, Lifelong Resident of County, Dies
Funeral Services Held Monday for Aged Woman, Mother of Cresco Man.
Mrs. George Hoppie, 80, life-long resident of Howard county, died in her home in Cresco early Saturday morning. She had been in ill health for the last five years, having entered the Cresco hospital for treatment several times. Her condition became worse recently and on Wednesday suffered a stroke.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hoppie were held Monday afternoon. A family prayer service was held in the Larson Funeral home at 12:45 followed by services in the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church at 2:00. The Rev. R. R. Ahrens, pastor, was in charge and burial was in the Howard Center cemetery.
Mrs. Hoppie, the former Ella Lydia Hilke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hilke, was born May 23, 1872, at Howard Center. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Davis Corners by the Rev. Mr. Helman.
She was married to George Johann Hoppie by the Rev. Mr. Neidermeyer in a ceremony performed in the Davis Corners Lutheran church October 2, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppie became the parents of two children, both of whom survive.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hoppie lived on a farm near Schley, later farming in the Howard Center community. In 1932 Mrs. Hoppie came to Cresco to care for her aged mother, Mrs. Hilke, who died in November, 1940 at the age of 100 years.
Surviving Mrs. Hoppie are her husband; two sons, Fred Hoppie of Cresco, and Leonard Hoppie of Fairmont, Minnesota; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jake Derr of Chester, and other relatives.
Preceding Mrs. Hoppie in death were two brothers and five sisters.
