George J. Hoppie Dies Tuesday in Cresco Rest Home

Funeral services for George John Hoppie, 90, of Cresco, who died last Tuesday afternoon in the Good Samaritan home, were held at the Immanuel Lutheran church Thursday afternoon.

The Rev. E. C. Franke, pastor, conducted the services, and burial was made in the Howard Center cemetery. The Bradley Funeral home had charge of the arrangements.

George John Hoppie, oldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hoppie, was born at Lena, Illinois, November 3, 1869. In infancy he was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed April 4, 1885.

When 18 years of age, he moved with his parents to Howard county, where he continued to make his home until his death.

Mr. Hoppie was married to Ella Hilke in the Davis Corners Lutheran church October 2, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppie became the parents of two sons, Fred and Leonard.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoppie farmed for about 50 years in the Cresco community. He retired 17 years ago and spent the last year and one-half in the Good Samaritan home.

He was in good health most of his life. A week ago he suffered a slight stroke from which he had apparently recovered. Then he became critically ill again on Monday and died the following afternoon.

Mr. Hoppie was a member of the Immanual Lutheran church for the last 30 years.

Surviving Mr. Hoppie are his two sons, Fred of Cresco, and Leonard of Fairmont, Minnesota. There are also a sister, Mrs. Sadie Radke of Elma, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Hoppie in death were his wife, who died in 1952; four brothers, including Charles, William, Ernest and Arthur and seven sisters, Mrs. Annie Whittier, Mrs. Amy Somers, Mrs. Lillie Hecht, Mrs. Minnie Reinhardt, Mrs. Amelia Rakow, Mrs. Lizzie Schultz and Mrs. Lulu Decker.
