Edward L. Davenport Former Mayor Here,Dies in Illinois

Edward L. Davenport, 78, mayor of Cresco for a fifteen-year period, died Saturday in the Charleston,Illinois, home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Fagan.

The cause of death of the Des Moines resident was listed as complications resulting from old age.

Mr. Davenport married the former Aura Faulkner of Cresco, March 11,1895, in Des Moines. They made their home there until 1902 when they moved to Cresco.

While a resident here, Mr. Davenport was engaged in the retail and wholesale tobacco business. He served as mayor of Cresco for 15 years.

In 1941, Mr. Davenport returned to Des Moines, where he served as the state fair board supervisor until 1943. He then worked for the army, storing supplies on the fair grounds, a position which he held for five years.

He and his wife moved to Davenport in 1948,remaining there until Mrs. Davenport's death in 1950. Mr. Davenport then returned to Des Moines to live until shortly before his death.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Howland and Mrs. Emma Owen, both of Des Moines, and two brothers, Benjamin of Coon Rapids, and William of San Francisco.

Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Gordon Church of Omaha, Mrs. Ralph Van Horn of Salem,Oregon,Mrs. R.J.Clark and Mrs. L.V.Thiering both of Davenport. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive Mr. Davenport.
