The oldest living Roman Catholic Prelate of the World, Archbishop Edward D. Howard, died January 2nd, 1983 at Portland, Oregon. Archbishop Howard was the retired Archbishop of Portland, Oregon and was a native son of Cresco, Iowa. He was 105 years old at the time of death.
Archbishop Howard was born near Cresco November 5,1877 and attended local schools in Cresco. He studied the classics and philosophy at Loras College in Dubuque, followed by theological studies at St. Paul's Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.The archbishop was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Dubuque on June 12, 1906, by the Most Reverand John Ireland, Archbishop of St. Paul.
Following ordination, he was assigned to the Faculty of Loras College, where he served for 18 years. He was a professor of Latin, Greek, English and Mathematics at the college. Later he served as perfect of discipline and academic dean at the institution.
Archbishop Howard was the fifth president of Loras to be appointed to the hierarchy, when he was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Davenport. Two years later he was appointed Archbishop of Oregon City, later Portland, Oregon, and was installed in the post on April 30,1926.
The Archbishop served the Portland Archdiocese for 40 years. He retired December 14, 1966 and took residence in a home on the grounds of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon, and order of Sisters who came to the Archdiocese of Portland at his invitation.
The last few years of his long life, the Archbishop lived at the Sisters of St. Mary Nursing Home in Breaverton, Oregon.
