Clemmer, John Dr. 1905 - 1984

Cresco friends have received word of the death of Dr. John J. Clemmer, 79, November 20th, at his home in Albany, N.Y. Dr. Clemmer was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, in May 1905. where his father was practicing dentistry. The family moved back to Cresco later that year after having lived in Marshalltown two years. John attended the Cresco public school, graduating with the class of 1922.

While still in high school he purchased the Cresco Candy Shop, and managed the business until the fall of 1923 when he entered the University of Iowa, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1927. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1930 and for the next three years worked in the Department of Pathology at University Hospitals.

In 1933 Dr. Clemmer was offered the position of associate director of the Bender Hygienic Laboratory on Albany,N.Y. He became the director of the laboratory in 1934, a position he held until failing health forced his retirement. He is survived by his wife,Edna, son John and grandchildren.

Dr. Clemmer was a grandson of the late J.J. Clemmer who came to Howard County in 1856, beginning the practice of medicine in the village of New Oregon where he also had a drug store.

A nephew of Dr. Clemmmer, Dr.F.L.Klingle,is also a physician,practicing in Florida.
