Services held for L. Steinmetz, Jr.
Funeral services for Leonard Steinmetz, Jr. were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. The Rev. Bruce Hobert officiated. Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery. Honorary pall bearers were: Adolph Brenno, Don Neubauer, Gareth Vagts, Frank Jackson, Wayne Olson, Raymond Baumgartner, Vern Mahlis. Pall bearers were: Scott Wibben, Craig Chyle, Jeff Wibben, Jason Wibben, Tim McFadden, Todd Neubauer. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Leonard, Jr., 74, died Tuesday, February 15, 2000 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco following complications from strokes.
Leonard Steinmetz, Jr. was born May 8, 1925 in Winneshiek County, the son of Leonard and Sigrid (Otteson) Steinmetz. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1943. Leonard excelled in baseball, and was a member of 4-H and shared his love for Black Angus cattle.
In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served overseas during World War II and in the Korean War.
On October 17, 1948 he married Adah Phipps at the Madison Lutheran Church near Ridgeway. Following their marriage Leonard worked for many years for the Northern Iowa Oil Company.
He was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Adah; one daughter: Ann E. Hall of Cynthiana, KY; one son: Mark of Cresco; two granddaughters; one brother: Charles of Washington, DC; and three sisters: Lois Gunhus of Decorah, Marian Wibben of Stewartville, MN, and Janet McFadden of Overland Park, KS.
Leonard, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Harold and Robert.
