Services held for Guy Van De Weerd October 10

Funeral services for Gysbert “Guy” Van De Weerd of Cresco, IA were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at Cresco Methodist Church in Cresco with Rev. Mike Carey officiating. Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery of rural Cresco.

Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA handled the arrangements.

Guy, 94, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at the Patty Elwood Center in rural Cresco.

Gysbert “Guy” Van De Weerd was born July 16, 1912 in Beaver Township, Fillmore County, MN just north of Chester, IA, the son of Herman and Effie (Van Grevenhof) Van De Weerd. He attended rural school until the beginning of eighth grade when he was shot in the leg in a hunting accident. He spent most the next year recuperating. Until the time of his marriage he hired out as a farm hand.

On June 12, 1939, he married Dorothy Craft at the Lime Springs Methodist Church. They became the parents of one child. After their marriage, Guy worked road construction until 1942 when he started farming He farmed various farms in Howard County. In 1955 they moved to a small farm within the Cresco city limits. Guy drove school bus and a livestock truck for a few years and drove a tank truck for Standard Oil until his retirement.

After moving into the Cresco city limits he was elected to the Cresco City Council. After retiring he volunteered at the Cresco Senior Citizen Meal Site for many years and did errands for people that couldn’t drive. He received an award from Governor Branstad for volunteering.

Guy enjoyed life and helping people. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He loved to visit with them.

Guy is survived by his daughter: Fran (Don) Burke; five grandchildren: Brenda Burke of Decorah, Mark (Becky) Burke, Laurie Bollman, Scott (Tonya) Burke and Brad (Jennifer) Burke; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, all in the Cresco and Decorah area; one brother: Bert Van De Weerd of Strongville, OH; one sister: Helen Hansen of Greeley, CO; brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. Guy was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; and one brother: Marion.
