Marie Lybbert, 98

Memorial services for Marie O. Lybbert of Weslaco, Texas will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Interment will be in the Howard Center Cemetery.

Marie, 98, died Sunday, April 18, 2010 at John Knox Village in Weslaco, Texas.

Marie Opal Lybbert was born April 5, 1912 on a farm near Elma the daughter of George H. Lovell and Mary E. (Koebrick) Lovell. The family moved to a farm east of Lime Springs when she was in third grade. She graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1931 and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls where she received her teacher’s certificate.

On April 18, 1933 she married Ralph F. Lybbert and they moved to a farm near Bonair.

Marie was active in all aspects of farming with her husband. In 1947, they purchased ownership in the John Deere dealership and Marie did the bookkeeping. They sold their dealership and moved back to their farm in 1950. After Ralph’s death in 1997, she moved to Cresco. Marie moved to John Knox Village, Weslaco, Texas in 2004.

Marie was a member of the Bonair Methodist Church until it closed in 1987. She had served in many capacities, including Methodist Women’s Vice President. She then moved her membership to the Cresco Methodist Church.

Marie was an avid gardener and canned much of her produce. She loved to fish and received an “Iowa Big Fish” award for catching a 13 pound trout. Vacations were spent traveling the United States and fishing on the Canadian border lakes. Many evenings were spent playing cards with their friends.

Marie is survived by one daughter: Gayle Lybbert (Gary) McLaughlin; grandsons: Bryce Burgess, Breck (Niki) Burgess and Brent (April) Burgess, all of St. Charles, Mo; step grandchildren: Lori (Richard) Fuerman of McKinney, Texas and Gregory (Mary) McLaughlin of Greenville, N.C.; great-grandchildren: Jessica, Quentin, Karla and Jack Burgess; step great-grandchildren: Kathleen, Nathan and Kimberly Golliver, Nicholas, John and Olivia McLaughlin and Jamie, Joslyn and Jillian Fuerman; nieces: Marvalee Miller, Janell Lybbert (Larry) Jacobson, Avis Lovell Andre; and nephews: Jerald (Elaine) Lybbert and Garyl Miller.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters: Velma Lovell, Florence Jones, Ada Parsons, Elsie Miller; brother: George; nieces: Aileen Lovell Everts, Winifred Mohr, Mary Hite; nephews: Jack Lybbert, James Lybbert, Frederick Hite, Robert Mohr, Keith King; and step granddaughter: Shelley McLaughlin Golliver.
