Herbert E. Morgan

Funeral services for Herbert E. Morgan were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon. The Rev. E. F. Byers, pastor of the Congregational church, officiated and burial was in the Howard Center cemetery west of Cresco.

Mr. Morgan died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Shafer on Tuesday afternoon, December 25, 1945, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 19 days, of a heart complication following influenza.

Herbert Eugene Morgan was born on a farm near Whitewater, Wis., Jan. 6, 1868. In 1874, at the age of six year, with his parents, he migrated to Howard county in a covered wagon. At that time Cresco was the terminus of the Milwaukee railroad from McGregor. He lived the rest of his life in and near Cresco. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.

He was united in marriage with Lillian Emma Thayer on January 25, 1893, and to their union four children were born. Mrs. Morgan preceded him in death, Oct. 6, 1941. He had one sister, Estella, Mrs. C. T. Millard, who died in 1906. He is survived by his four children: Leon Morgan of Lime Springs; Ellis of Spencer; Burton of Lime Springs, and Marjorie, Mrs. Louis Shafer, Cresco; all of whom attended the funeral. There are 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild, four nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Mr. Morgan was a faithful and conscientious church worker, being secretary of the Methodist Sunday school for 25 years. He was a member of the board of stewards and of the board of trustees. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows, Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen lodges. He was a kind and loving husband and father and an honest, christian gentleman, highly respected by all who knew him.
