Mrs. Herbert E. Morgan
Mrs. Herbert E. Morgan, 69, passed away Monday, October 6, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis Shafer, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Morgan suffered a fall at her home a few weeks ago, from which she sustained severe injuries, and that she might receive the care of her daughter she was removed to the Shafer home where she was tenderly ministered to during the period intervening between her unfortunate accident and her death.
Lillian Emma Thayer, daughter of the late William Henry and Catherine Margaret Thayer, was born May 1, 1872, in Howard Center Township, Howard County, Iowa.
Here she grew to young womanhood, and received her early education in the rural school in District Number Three, Howard Center township. Later she attended the Cresco Public School, graduating from there with the class of 1891.
Following her graduation she was employed in the office of the Cresco Republican, edited by the late W. B. and E. B. Webster. Later she was employed as compositor in the office of the Plain Dealer, by its owners, W. R. & F. J. Mead.
On January 25, 1893, she was united in marriage with Herbert E. Morgan, at the home of her parents, and in the house in which she was born.
Four children were born to this union: Leon E., of Cresco; Ellis T. of Spencer, Iowa; W. Burton of Lime Springs, Iowa, and Marjorie E. (Mrs. Louis Shafer) of Cresco.
Mrs. Morgan became a member of the Methodist Church at the age of sixteen and maintained an active interest in its work until her death. Her work in the Sunday School and the Ladies Aid of the church was given with a fine devotion and loyalty. For many years she acted as Secretary of the Church School and was always present except when, as in recent months, her health prevented her taking the more active part she had always enjoyed.
Mrs. Morgan was also a member of the W. C. T. U. holding the office of county president and other offices in the county organization.
Mrs. Morgan was a good wife and mother, a good neighbor; one of those persons who did not know how to spare herself but who gave her life freely for others.
Surviving the loss of the wife and mother are her husband, H. E. Morgan, her three sons and one daughter, a brother, Carl H. Thayer of Lime Springs, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Through the courtesy of the Congregational church folk, funeral services for Mrs. Morgan were conducted in that church edifice Wednesday afternoon. Rev. C. W. Turner, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated, and special organ music was rendered by Joseph Burguess.
Acting as pallbearers were L. E. Emmons, Philip Kratz, W. R. Ashley, Leo Loughrey, Arthur White and B. E. Thorne. Interment was at Howard Center Cemetery.
