Joseph T. Steinmetz

Joseph T. Steinmetz died at his home at 302 Third Avenue East at 6:45 Friday morning following a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at Immanuel Lutheran church at two o’clock Sunday afternoon, his pastor, the Rev. L. W. Moench , officiating. Mrs. Geo. West and Mrs. E. J. Widman sang the two selected hymns, “In the Cross of Christ I Glory,” and “Abide With Me.”

The Brotherhood was in attendance and the chorus of that society sang “Rock of Ages.” Other members were pallbearers, others furnished cars for the funeral, some were ushers and some gave services in a general way at the funeral. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery.

The following wreaths were given in memory of Joseph Steinmetz to be sent to the children’s home in Sterling, Neb.; Joe Brookner family and Mrs. Huinker, $1.50; Rev. and Mrs. John Pless, $2.00, Bethany Circle, $5.00 for benevolence to be designated by Mrs. Steinmetz.

The following life sketch of deceased was read by Rev. Moench at the funeral.

Joseph T. Steinmetz was born Aug. 3, 1861, in Winneshiek county near Spillville, Iowa. He was married July 2, 1894 to Miss Sophia Prinz by the Rev. John Pless at Davis Corners, Ia. This union was blessed with six children: Four sons, Leonard, Clinton, Joel and Elmer and two daughters, Luella and Kathryn.

The next day after his marriage Mr. Steinmetz moved onto the home farm in Winneshiek county and lived there with his wife and family until March, 1921, when he became a resident of Cresco. He was a successful farmer and for 44 years was one of the pillars as a member of Immanuel Lutheran church. He had a tremendous love for his church and his work for it went to the last day of his life. He was a charter member of the Brotherhood and a regular guest at the friendly luncheons of the Bethany Circle. He will be missed by many, his church and its societies and the pastor.

Mr. Steinmetz became afflicted with a lingering illness about two years ago. In September, 1936, he went to New Hampton for a consultation, the outcome of which did not appear favorable to him. In May 1937, he followed the advice of his home physician and went to the Rochester clinic where later he took x-ray and radium treatments which brought relief and lengthened his life. Since June, 1937, he did not leave his home. He was a patient sufferer for ten months under the splendid care of his spouse who had been united with him for 44 years.

On March 11, 1938, at 6:45 a.m. he was relieved of all his troubles and taken home to his reward of faith according to belief in the words of scripture: “The just shall live by faith.” Gal 3, 11.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Sophia, his sons, Leonard, Clinton, Joel and Elmer of Cresco, Ia., his daughters Luella who is Mrs. Noel Farnworth of Austin, Minn., and Kathryn who is Mrs. Chas. Frank Jr. of Cresco; three half brothers, Wm. Frey of Cresco; Charles Frey of Spillville and Philip Frey of Calmer; two half sisters, Louise who is Mrs. Joe Brookner of Calmar and Anna who is Mrs. Robert Hauser of Decorah. There are 18 grandchildren.
