Funeral for Mrs. Sophia Steinmetz In Cresco Monday
Mrs. Sophia Steinmetz, 84, life-long resident of Howard county, died Thursday night at the Cresco Good Samaritan home, where she had made her home the last several years.
Funeral services were held on Monday in the Immanuel Lutheran church and burial was in the Howard Center cemetery. The Rev. E. D. Franke, pastor of the Cresco church, conducted the services. The Bradley Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Steinmetz suffered a broken hip July 7, 1953, and had since been a semi-invalid.
Sophia Prinz, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Prinz was born January 21, 1874, in Howard Center township. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Davis Corners, where she also was confirmed.
Following the death of her mother, Mrs. Steinmetz lived with her father and family on a farm in Howard Center township. She worked in various homes and later was employed by a Mr. Flood, a pioneer grocer in Cresco.
Mrs. Steinmetz was married to Joseph Steinmetz July 2, 1894. The couple farmed until 1921. After moving to Cresco, Mr. Steinmetz died in March, 1938, and Mrs. Steinmetz continued to make her home in Cresco.
She was a member of the Cresco Immanuel Lutheran church and the Bethany Circle of the church.
Mrs. Steinmetz is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Noel (Luella) Farnsworth of Austin, Minnesota, and Mrs. Charles (Kathryn) Frank, Jr., of Cresco, and four sons, Leonard, Joel and Elmer Steinmetz of Cresco, and Clinton Steinmetz of DeForest, Wisconsin.
There are also 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one brother, William Prinz of Thayer, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Ferdinand and Charles Prinz, and six sisters, Mary, Eliza, Anna, Ida, Bertha and Alvina.
