John Brockmeyer, 93, services held Monday

Funeral services for John Brockmeyer, 93, a former resident of Howard County, were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 16, at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Interment was in Howard Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Lloyd L. Horton Post. No. 535 of Lime Springs. Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He died Friday, July 13, at Knoxville, Iowa.

John Brockmeyer was born in Clayton County, near Colesburg on September 14, 1890, the son of John Henry and Anna (Woeste) Brockmeyer. He attended the rural school in Delaware County, Charles City High School, and attended Coe College for one year. John served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1918, to June, 1919, being in Europe when the Armistice was signed.

He married Clara L. Kuntz on February 18, 1920, at her parent’s home near Ridgeway. They farmed near Colesburg until 1932 when they moved on a farm north of Davis Corners. They remained on that farm until 1968 when they moved into Cresco. John was a member of the Methodist Church and the American Legion. He had served as commander of the Brockmeyer American Legion post in Colesburg, the post named for his brother.

John was a member of the Farm Bureau for 61 years. He helped to organize the Howard County Experimental Farm and was a member for 20 years; helped organize the Howard County Soil Conservation and was a past president and was active in various other township and county organizations. John served two terms as a state Representative in 1951 and ’53.

Survivors are three daughters, Wilma Hinners of Spring Valley, MN; Lois DeJoode of Pleasantville and Zelda Clark of Saranac, MI; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.
