Viola Hensley, 98
Funeral services for Viola Hensley of Cresco, IA were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. Interment was in Howard Center Cemetery in rural Cresco, IA.
Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, IA handled the arrangements.
Viola, 98, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Floyd Co. Memorial Hospice Unit in Charles City, IA.
Viola Hensley was born July 15, 1908 in Brownsdale, MN, the daughter of William and Susan (Steffen) Pittelko. She was baptized at St. Joe’s Church in Cresco, IA in 1908 and confirmed in 1924 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended school in Kendallville, IA, and grew up in Chester and Bonair, IA.
On December 10, 1938 Viola married Archie “Jake” Hensley of Hale, MO at the Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage. To this union three children were born: Rebecca, Wayne William, and Joseph. After Viola and “Jake” were married they lived in Ridgeway, IA and then later moved to Cresco, IA. During her younger years, she worked for several neighbors, and after they moved to Cresco she worked for the Good Samaritan Home until its closing, and then for Evan’s Memorial Home for almost 20 years as a nurses aide.
She was a long time member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She enjoyed flowers, reading her bible, listening to gospel music, and gardening (especially peas for her grandchildren).
She is survived by two children: Rebecca Loftus of Charles City, IA and Joseph of Cresco, IA; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband on July 27, 1971; one son: Wayne William on September 23, 1943; four brothers: Bennett, Carl, Walt, and Albert; one sister: Alvina Grinhaug; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; a son-in-law: Robert Loftus; a nephew and one great-great grandson: Ethan Gates.
