Joel Steinmetz, 77, funeral held Monday
Funeral services for Joel Friedrich Steinmetz, 77, were held Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. E. C. Franke and the Rev. R. I. Jones of Mason City officiating. Burial was in the Howard Center cemetery with the Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He died Saturday morning at his home.
Mr. Steinmetz was born August 28 1900 on a farm east of Cresco in Winneshiek county, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Steinmetz. On Sept. 23, 1900 he was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran church, confirmed on March 28, 1915 and remained a member of the church. He was a leader in the men of church and served on the church council for several years.
He graduated from Cresco high school and attended the University of Minnesota for one year. For several years he was deputy county auditor and then was the Howard County auditor for ten years. For the next 12 years he worked for the State Social Welfare Department. About ten years ago he retired, but worked part-time in the office of the Howard County Assessor until the time of his death.
On June 5, 1935 he married Gwen Thomas in the old farm home of the bride, now the Albert Thomas home, near Lime Springs. The Rev. R. L. Jones officiated.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Leonard, Clinton and Elmer; one sister, Mrs. Luella Farnsworth.
Survivors include his wife Gwen; his son, Thomas of St. Paul, Minn; his daughter, Gwenetta McMahon of Minneapolis; his sister, Mrs. Katherine Frank of Cresco.
