Velma B. Hanson, age 94, passed away on May 26, 2012 in Cresco, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Visitation will be held from 9 until time of service, Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the church. Velma B. Hanson, better known to everyone as Grams, was born on July 2, 1917 to Glen and Barbara (Schwindt) Broadwell, in Southern Minnesota. They moved to Mallard, Iowa where she completed third grade and Emmetsburg, Iowa where she graduated from high school. On her 18th birthday, she married Lawrence E. Hanson. They were married 70 years and worked side by side. When they first married the couple ran a gas station and then farmed. In 1958, they moved to Cresco and purchased the Gamble Hardware Store, which they ran for 14 years. On weekends Velma helped Lawrence when he worked at the Frankville Cheese Factory, admitting she loved the cheese curds he made on those weekends. In the last 10 years Grams went daily with her daughter to work at Up & Running Electronics/The Willows, helping when she could. Toward the end it became harder for her to get around but she still wanted to go along to work. Velma collected Bells and had accumulated over 500 of them. She loved to sew, crochet, and keep her mind sharp by figuring out crossword puzzles. Velma enjoyed when the 3:00 p.m. coffee club would come in to visit at the store. That was the bright spot of her day. Together Velma and Lawrence had 2 children, LuVerne of Forest City, IA, and Rhonda (Dale) Vrba of Cresco, 8 grandchildren, Toni (Virgil) Krug, Patsy (Gene) Pavelka, Becky (Lyle) Hanson, Mark Hanson, Bobbie (Mark) Hatlestad, Shawn (Gayle) Hanson, Scott (Connie) Vrba, and Gina Vrba, 11 great grandchildren, Sara, Amber, Tyler, Mirah, Logan, Steven, Aaron, Megan, Jared, Franklin, and Amanda, 2 great-great grandchildren, Jordan and Grace. Today we celebrate her life and know she is very happy to be with Lawrence again.
