Delores Verbeck Cowles, 87, of Columbia, Missouri, formerly of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Columbia Manor Care Center in Columbia, Missouri. Funeral Services for Delores Verbeck Cowles, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery. Family will greet friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. and wake service to follow. Delores (Dee as she was known to family and friends) was born on June 2, 1924 in Farmington, Minnesota to James Dennis Magirl and Clara (Hosch) Magirl. She was one of six children, five girls and one boy in the Magirl family. Her surviving siblings include Mary Callahan, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Florence Thompson, Reno, Nevada. Delores grew up as a farm girl, preferring to work outside on the farm. Following graduation from high school, Dee worked for Oelwein Chemical Co (Occo) in Oelwein, Iowa. Edward Verbeck and Delores Magirl were married on Sept 25, 1945. Three children were born to this couple: Carol Nierling, Columbia, Missouri, Ron (Kathy) Verbeck, Lime Springs, Iowa, Kay Verbeck (who preceeded her in death in 1978). Delores is survived by 5 grandchildren: Jonathan (Laura) Nierling, League City, Texas, Casey (Jon) Vobr, Cresco, Iowa Caitlin Schmitt, Cedar Falls, Iowa. In addition, there are three great grandchildren. Ed Verbeck preceeded Delores in death in 1985. In 1988, Delores married Robert Cowles, then from Lamont. They moved to Cresco after their marriage. Also surviving are three step children: Dennis (Pat) Cowles, Iowa City; Jane (Stuart) Seedorff, Lamont, Iowa and Lynette West, Lamont. There are 7 step grandchildren. Most of Delores' work outside the home centered around agriculture. After working on Occo, she held bookkeeping positions at Cresco Pellets, Cargill and finally at Rodden and Johnson (John Deere). During her years in these positions, she made many life long friends. Dee had many interests outside the home. She was an avid bowler, competing in league play in both Oelwein and Cresco. She particularly enjoyed traveling to State bowling tournaments with friends. While bowling for the Occo team in Oelwein, her team won several league championships. Her first state bowling tournament was in 1948 (Fort Dodge, Iowa) when she was bowling with the Occo team. That team placed first in Class C in the 1948 tournament. After moving to Lamont, Iowa, Dee continued to bowl. This activity carried with her when she moved to Cresco in 1963. She continued to participate in league bowling and again enjoyed the team trips to State bowling tournaments. Dee was an avid gardener who enjoyed preserving what she grew. She had a well deserved reputation as a wonderful cook. Her deep fried onion rings were among the best, with people coming to picnic with her in the hope she would be fixing onion rings. Dee loved to grill out whether at home or the Backbone state park, near Lamont. Golfing was an activity she and husband, Ed, took up. Dee did league golfing in Cresco. She was known as a long ball hitter. Dee also enjoyed fishing. She caught, cleaned and cooked many differt kinds of fish. This was an activity she carried into later life as she and husband, Bob spent many enjoyable days at their place near Harpers' Ferry on the Mississippi River. Dee and Bob enjoyed spending winters in Pharr, Texas, where they enjoyed many “retirement” activities, including trips to Mexico. Family and friends were very important to Dee as she often visited various family members. Dee will be missed by family and friends; however, they know she is in a better place.
