Patrick Whalen, 80, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on February 23, 2012 at his home. A Mass of Remembrance will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm St. Cresco, Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Patrick “Pat” Whalen was born on March 4, 1931 in Plymouth Rock, coldwater area, Iowa to Urban and Blanche (Demers) Whalen. On September 30, 1950 he was united in marriage to Alice May Burgess. Pat served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from December 1951 until December 1953, and received the Purple Heart for his service. In his younger days, Pat worked as a part time farmer and for the railroad. He then began working as a carpenter. Pat enjoyed fishing, boating, playing cards, and watching Westerns on TV. He loved spending time with his family and walking his little dog Lily. Pat is survived by his son, Alan (Sherry) Whalen of Kasson, MN; daughters, Myrna Posley of Rochester, MN, and Beverly (Duane) Massman, of Leland, IA; 6 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Carolan of Austin, MN; and brother, Oliver Whalen of Rose Creek, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Alice, son, Gaylord, brothers, Leonard, Leslie, Floyd, and Alois, and sisters, Gladys and Cecilia, and Alethea.
