Byron Hanlon services Oct. 18

Funeral services for Byron Hanlon were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 18 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cresco with the Rev. Michael L. Tauke and Msgr. Donald Hawes concelebrating the mass of the Resurrection. Interment was in the St. Agnes Cemetery at Plymouth Rock. Pallbearers were the son-in-laws and two grandsons. Conway Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Byron Hanlon, 85, died Wednesday, October 15, 1997 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after suffering a stroke.

Byron John Hanlon was born December 2, 1911 in Winneshiek County the son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Snyder) Hanlon. He attended the rural school and had to help on the farm after his father died. He retired from the farm and moved into Cresco in February of 1977.

On September 10, 1935, he married Marjorie Gossman at St. Agnes Church at Plymouth Rock. They became the parents of seven children.

Byron was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau for over 50 years, a former member of St. Agnes Church and recently a member of St. Joseph’s Church.

Byron is survived by: his wife, Marjorie; six daughters, Jean Ann Connolly of Prescott, AZ, Janice Roeder of Byron, MN, Arlene Hengel of Rochester, MN, Diane Beelendorf of Green Bay, WI, Cathy Elliott of Decorah, and Mary Jean Smorstad of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul of LaPorte City and Lyle of Harmony, MN, and three sisters, Ethel Sexton of Cresco, Mae Armstrong of Rochester, MN, and Dolores Quinn of Allen Park, MI.

He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas, in infancy; his parents; three brothers, Thomas, Joseph and Francis; and three sisters, Rita Kingsley, Agnes Armstrong and Esther Carolan.
