Dr. Edward Goetch, 87, Funeral Here Thursday

Dr. Edward William Goetch, 87, former director of placement and professor of education at the University of Northern lowa, died in a Cedar Falls hospital Monday evening. Dr. Goetch, native of Cresco, fell Saturday in his home and suffered a hip fracture.

Funeral services for Dr. Goetch will be held tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 1:30 from the United Methodist church. The Rev. George Baker, pastor, will conduct the service and burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery with the Bradley-Lindstom Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Goetch, son of Mr. and Mrs. William P. Goetch, was born in Cresco, April 13, 1881. He received his bachelor of arts, masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Iowa. He joined the staff at the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, in 1918 as professor of rural education. He became director of the university's placement bureau in 1928 and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1951.

Surviving Dr. Goetch are his wife, Pearl, of Cedar Falls; one son, James Goetch of Chicago, former teacher in the local school system, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Evans of Cresco.

A memorial scholarship fund is being established with the University of Northern Iowa Foundation in tribute to Dr. Goetch.

Funeral Held Here for Dr. Edward Goetch, 87

Funeral services for Dr. Edward William Goetch, 87, a native of Cresco, who spent his entire adult life as an educator, were held from the Cresco United Methodist church last Thursday afternoon.

Dr. Goetch died in Sartori Memorial hospital in Cedar Falls, June 3.

Conducting the funeral services was the Rev. George Baker. Burial was in Cedar Hill cemetery near Cresco. The Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral home was In charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Goetch, son of William F. and Bertha Goetch was born April 13, 1881, at Cresco. He received his education in the elementary and secondary schools of Howard county. He was also a graduate of Iowa State Teachers college and the State University of Iowa, with bachelor of arts, masters and doctorate degrees. He spent his entire life as an educator, starting first as a rural school teacher. In 1918, he came to the University of Northern Iowa as a professor of rural education. He became director of the placement bureau in 1928 and served there until his retirement in 1951. He was the author of a number of publications in the field of education. He was a life member of the National Educational association and the Iowa State Educational association, a member of the Iowa and National Placement association, the American Association of School Administrators, the American College Personnel association, and Phi Delta Kappa, as well as other professional societies.

Dr. Goetch was united in marriage with Pearl Evans of Cresco, Aug. 16, 1911. They became the parents of one son, James. They made their home in Cedar Falls most of their lives.

Dr. Goetch was active in the affairs of the community, serving as a member of the Cedar Falls city council, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Rotary club. He was a member of the Methodist church, and served as a member of the official board, a trustee, chairman of the pastoral relations committee, a teacher in the church school, and served as a member of the local board and of the state board of the Wesley Foundation of Iowa.

He was a member of several Masonic organizations, including Blue Lodge Mason, Chapter Mason, Knights of Templar, Order of the Eastern Star, Order of Shriners, and a member of the Cedar Falls High Twelve.

Surviving Dr. Goetch are his wife, Pearl; son, James of Des Plaines, Illinois; two grandchildren, James, Jr., and Diane, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Evans of Lime Springs.
