Services held for Arvid Bigalk, 85

Funeral services for Arvid Bigalk were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 8 at Zion United Methodist Church, rural Cresco, with Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery near the church. Lindstrom Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Arvid, 85, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at Regional Health Services of Howard County of stroke complications.

Arvid Arden Bigalk was born July 18, 1916 in Howard County, the son of Charles and Clara (Mandelko) Bigalk. He received his early education at Lincoln School in Albin Township, after which he worked on the family farm.

In May of 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Machinist Mate on LST-247 in the South Pacific during World War II. He was discharged from the Navy in late 1945 and returned to the farm. He continued farming until 1995 when he retired and moved to Cresco.

Arvid was a generous contributor to fund-raisers, charities and his church. He was interested in helping to advance the education of young people in the community through private financial assistance, Dollars for Scholars and his own Bigalk Scholarship Fund.

He is survived by four sisters: Beryl Lahr of Compton, CA, Thelberta Norman of Denver, CO, Carol Downey of Rogers, AR, and Shirley Davis of Cresco.

Arvid was preceded in death by two brothers: Roger and Clinton.
