Charles Bigalk, Director Of REC, Dies at Age 80

Funeral services for Charles Theodore Bigalk, 80, well-known Albion township farmer, were held at the Zion Evangelical United Brethren church Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Bigalk, who always enjoyed good health, died unexpectedly at his home Thursday evening.

Conducting the funeral services was the Rev. Dean Timm of Waverly. Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery with the Bradley Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Charles Theodore Bigalk, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bigalk, was born Nov. 10, 1886, near Cresco, in Albion township. He was baptized in infancy and at an early age became a member of Zion Evangelical church where he remained faithful until his death.

On Dec. 31, 1912, he was united in marriage with Clara L. Mandelko. Mr. and Mrs. Bigalk made their home on the farm which had been homesteaded by his grandparents. They lived on this same farm all of their married life. Mr. and Mrs. Bigalk became the parents of 10 children, seven of whom survive.

Throughout his life Mr. Bigalk was active in various organizations, working toward the progress and betterment of the community. He served as Sunday school superintendent at the Zion church for 40 years and helped organize the local Rural Electric Cooperative. He served as a member of the board of directors of the Hawkeye Tri-County Rural Electric Cooperative since its incorporation in 1938.

Surviving Mr. Bigalk, in addition to his wife, are his three sons, Clinton and Arvid, at home, and Roger of El Centre, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. H. B. (Beryl) Lahr of Compton, Calif., Mrs. William (Thelberta) Norman of Denver, Colo., Mrs. E. J. (Carol) Downey of Acton, Mass., and Shirley of San Francisco, Calif., and six grandchildren.

Preceding Mr. Bigalk in death were two sons, one daughter, who died in infancy, his parents, and two brothers, Newton C. and Will J. Bigalk.
