Larry Dean Bigalk, 13, Drowns In Farm Pond Near Harmony
A 13 - year - old Howard county farm youth, Larry Dean Bigalk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Bigalk, drowned while swimming in a farm conservation pond on the farm of Francis Grebln northeast of Harmony, last Wednesday.
The youth was visiting with his cousin, Roger Applen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Applen, when the two boys decided to go for a bike ride. When they arrived at the conservation pond, approximately one-half mile from the Applen farm home, the two boys went for a swim.
Larry never came up after jumping into the pond. Roger rushed home to get help, and the Harmony fire department was called. The body was recovered, but firemen were unable to revive the boy.
Funeral services were conducted in the Granger Lutheran church Friday afternoon with the Rev. Richard Ludden, pastor of the Zion Evangelical United Brethren church, in charge. Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery with the Bradley Funeral home directing arrangements.
Larry attended grade school at the Nichols rural school, where he completed the seventh grade in May. He was dedicated in baptism in his home as a child and was a member of the Zion church and the church's youth fellowship group.
Surviving are his parents and two brothers, Manly and Terry, and two sisters, Ann and Gayleen.
There are also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Applen of Harmony, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bigalk of Cresco.
